The maximum distance the sensor should be placed from the target is determined by the sensor field of view specification in conjunction with of the size of the target. The UIRT/C field of view is approximately 1:2 which means that the area the sensor will measure will be have a diameter of about twice the distance the sensor is positioned from the target surface.
In your case, if you position the sensor 30 inches from the target, it will measure an an area of a diameter of about 60 inches. If your target is less than 60 inches at its narrowest point your reading will be affected by the temperature of area outside the target.
