The Xi 320 MT is a compact, fixed-mount mid-wave infrared camera built to do something most thermal cameras can't: measure temperature through flames. Its sensitive mid-wavelength detector operates at 3.9 µm, a band where flames and combustion gases are largely transparent - so the camera sees past the fire to the actual workpiece, brick wall, or product inside a furnace. It captures radiometric thermal images at 320 x 240 pixels and measures from 475 °C up to 1700 °C (887 °F to 3092 °F), making it ideal for high-temperature metallurgical, ceramic, and chemical processes. Housed in a rugged, IP67-rated stainless steel body and powered over Ethernet, it is built for permanent installation in the harshest combustion environments.

Sees Through Flames - the Mid-Wave Advantage
Ordinary long-wave thermal cameras are blinded by flames: the burning gases radiate strongly in the long-wave band and obscure whatever is behind them. The Xi 320 MT works at 3.9 µm, a mid-wave "window" where flames and combustion gases are far more transparent. That lets the camera look straight through the fire and read the true temperature of the target behind it - a billet in a reheat furnace, the refractory brick lining a kiln or combustion chamber, or a reaction inside a chemical reactor. For continuous high-temperature processes where the object of interest sits behind a flame, this is the camera that can actually see it.

Process Output and PLC Integration
A direct analog output (0/4 – 20 mA) and an isolated input are built in, and the included process interface cable terminates in a terminal block for wiring to your equipment. For more channels, the optional Industrial Process Interface stacks up to three modules for as many as nine analog or alarm outputs with a fail-safe relay, delivering several independent temperatures or alarms to a PLC. A built-in web server also lets you monitor and control the camera from any standard browser on the network.

Typical Applications
The Xi 320 MT is purpose-built for through-flame and high-temperature monitoring: workpieces inside furnaces and reheat lines, brick and refractory wall temperatures in combustion chambers and kilns, reactions inside chemical reactors, and flame-heating and hardening processes. It serves the metallurgical, ceramic, and chemical process industries where the target sits behind flames or at temperatures that demand a robust, non-contact view.

Compact Industrial Design
The Xi 320 MT packs its electronics into a compact stainless steel body measuring just Ø 36 mm x 100 mm with an M30 x 1 thread, weighing around 220 g. It is rated IP67 / NEMA 4 against dust and water and tested to IEC 60068 standards for shock and vibration, and its uncooled microbolometer detector runs maintenance-free for continuous operation. For the harshest installations, a water-cooled housing extends operation to ambient temperatures up to 250 °C, while an air purge with a protective window keeps the optics clean in dusty or smoky conditions, alongside outdoor housings, mounting brackets, and cables.

Motorized Focus and Optics
The motorized focus is set entirely in software, so the image can be optimized remotely - even refocusing through flames - without physical access to the camera. Four optics are available: 11° x 8°, 17° x 13°, 29° x 21°, and 41° x 30° fields of view, with optical resolution up to 561:1 using the 11° x 8° lens, which lets the camera resolve small targets from a safe distance away from the heat. Please note the optics are integral to the camera and are selected at the time of purchase; they cannot be changed or added later, so it is worth confirming the field of view and target distance for your application before ordering. Connectivity
The Xi 320 MT connects over fast Ethernet at 30 Hz (with Power over Ethernet) or USB at 5 Hz, on a static IP address. All signals are electrically isolated for reliable operation in industrial environments, and the camera can be powered by PoE, USB, or a 5 – 30 V DC supply. A built-in web server provides browser-based remote monitoring and control. The camera runs with the PIX Connect software on a connected PC, which performs the thermal processing.

Software
The camera ships with the license-free PIX Connect software - a full thermal-imaging platform for live measurement, analysis, and recording, with advanced functions such as line scanning, image merging, automatic spot detection, size-of-source-effect correction, and comparison functions. Developer kits (SDKs) are available for integrators building custom monitoring or automation applications. PIX Connect (or an SDK-based application) is required to operate the camera.

Choosing the Right Lens
Lens choice is a trade-off between how much area the camera sees and how small a detail it can accurately measure. A wide lens (41° x 30°) captures a large scene but spreads the 320 x 240 pixels across a bigger area, so each pixel reads a coarser spot; a narrow lens (11° x 8°) concentrates those pixels onto a small window, resolving much finer detail at distance - valuable when the camera must be mounted well back from the heat.

Two questions guide the choice. First, how far is the camera from the target, and is that distance fixed? Mounting close to a large object favors a wider lens, while measuring something across a furnace favors a narrower one. Second, what is the smallest feature that needs an accurate reading? For a trustworthy measurement the target should cover at least the camera's measurement field of view (MFOV) of 3 x 3 pixels, so the smaller the target, the narrower the lens you need.
